« Avremo l'Internet che ci meritiamo » (Bruce Sterling) *

In an attempt to retrace the history of the Web entries, I asked Gianluigi D'Angelo to tell his story in order to identify the subjects of the forthcoming dialogue.

For Gianluigi D'Angelo has been difficult to synthesize exactly ten years of history (beta born February 19, 2001). It came out a story that I decided to publish in its informality.

In memory of plots intertwine a bit 'all the experiences which have occurred in the network. A portrait is more than a history of interactions of these years.

This is the advance. See you soon in the interview that we will not sweetened side of the net.

Gianluigi D'Angelo

I am 10 years that we are on line . From the first experience of beta monograph on the subject of the next evolution in Channelbeta empty. In 2003 we were among the first to introduce the possibility to comment on articles, is also a forum where full register and participate in discussions. These first experiments were done in the same period architetture.it Furio Barzon (no longer online), who more than once organized meetings live chat.

was the time before us there was only one reference: architettura.it Marco Brizzi, who ever is in Italy's first experience relief from the world of on the Web and that a few weeks ago has turned 15 years old. At that time, was also born archphoto.it Emanuele Piccardo, which is still a point of reference, and there was There is still antithesi.info Sandro Lazier and Paul Ferrara, who in my opinion can be considered the first Italian blog on architecture, characterized by increasingly strong vis controversy that has produced several very interesting discussions .

The web was very different from now, but mainly it was much smaller. Even at international level, the landscape was not one today. There were archined , Archinect , baunetz , soloarquitectura etc. ...
We were there at that time.

Between 2002 and 2004 there was a moment of great ferment in the world of architecture anywhere. beta.net stands for Quarterly Bulletin Hermeneutic of Architecture. It was conceived as a digital publication on a quarterly basis monograph. the number zero, awarded to Romarchitettura, had as its theme the void. I had just returned from Portugal after an intense experience of a summer seminar whose theme was the urban voids. There was the wise and sympathetic eclectic Manuel Vicente, the mad Manuel Graça Dias , the diaphanous Carrillo Da Graça , the emerging blood Manuel Mateus and finally Gonçalo Byrne that happened to me as a tutor.

Needless to say, that experience was decisive for the choice of the theme of the number zero. Understand the concept of "Vazio" allows you to reverse the perspective. In fact, among the projects selected for its beta some were Portuguese. The interesting aspect of beta is the cultural cross-fertilization which addresses the issue. In addition to projects and reflections (where one of the first texts online Luigi Puglisi Prestinenza ) there are sections like " interference" with articles by artists, musicians, physicians and mathematicians, as the then unknown semi Piergiorgio Odifreddi : to receive its text, chasing away the mail between Europe and India. Then there was a space dedicated to student and finally to " itineraries " with two tracks on the theme of the void: the journey of Stalker in Rome, the gaps between the urban and social and photographic Juliana's Juice, recently moved to Tokyo, we proposed a path rhythmic in all those spaces and residual compressed in the Japanese capital.

This is the nucleus from which part Channelbeta , Channel Information on contemporary architecture.

As I said, beta gave us so many reasons. Our recognition came the first official mention of a premium Bruno Zevi Romarchitettura entirely unexpected. That Sunday I was in Rome for a walk almost by accident and decided to go to Castel Sant'Angelo to the ceremony. The surprise was huge as it was unexpected. I did not have nearly the time to enter the Sala Paolina that I was called on stage by Oliviero Beha. It was the first time in Italy (at least in my memory) that a digital product received official recognition. In the meantime, had already started a few months the process of transformation and mutation to Channelbeta. It was a natural evolution to better adapt to exploit the qualities of digital media. In fact, after the debut with some success, access decreased day by day, then decided to bring the news to post new updates, but also because I wanted to continue daily adventure. I soon realized that the way that contaminated the monograph and was nothing but a stretch. It is precisely for this reason that Channelbeta was born, with the initial idea to continue to pursue even quarterly updates with beta monographs: matter, the paradox was already in the works ... but as you can imagine, and as we know, for beta there.

Channelbeta from the first moment a great success. We tried to make our content as accessible as possible and not just in English, as it was in beta, which was available in three languages. Then we were the only ones in Italy to do so, even if only on certain content. This led us to have a growing percentage of foreign players who came in a short time, to become our main audience. The network was much smaller, despite our numbers, compared to those who are now almost tenderness, we were on the world ranking to Alexa around 140,000 position. The editorial work was done by hand in HTML with Dreamweaver for the article layout, it took hours, grueling work that we undertook almost all the free time and more. Over the years we had achieved a certain visibility.

course, the web was still a territory frequented by a small community, but slowly the world "official" architectural culture began to look with some interest. In a short time it was thought that this process soon to produce a revolution. So it was, but the times were not exactly short. The moment was of great turmoil, with Furio Barzon Architecture.it organized the Biennale-Out opening a space for debate and discussion and for the first time using the online chat. Our detective work was the architecture. We were curious about what was happening overseas and in the same way we want to talk out what happened in Italy. We wanted to understand how and what our fellow students studying overseas and that is why we contacted Winka Dubbeldam who then taught at Columbia University to ask if we could publish degree theses of his students . Even the academic world began to become aware of the network, program of university courses the teachers were beginning to enter into biographies of the courses of the Web sites of architecture. Then began the meetings, debates, round tables at the Polytechnic of Milan, Ferrara, IUAV etc. ...

Between 2003 and 2004 meetings were organized every 2-3 months that we were regularly invited to participate in an ongoing confrontation that grew month after month. With Channelbeta We tried to take the debate outside the institutions, with "O-live, speaks as you eat" , we met in clubs and premises of the main Italian cities, students, architects and teachers, sitting on the floor pillows, with a good glass of wine in one hand and with the microphone in the other, took turns in discussions arriving late into the night.

was the period in which the reportage of the bridge over the Strait of Domenico Cogliandro came out in installments, according to a wire that went beyond the single digital head, going from chapter to chapter to Archphoto to Channelbeta to Arch'it etc. ...
an innovative and ingenious experiment on Sunday that he was received with much enthusiasm from all of us. At that time it happened also that national newspapers reported in their pages of our articles, eg. Bauhaus for the first time, analyzing ed elaborando statistiche ufficiali, metteva in evidenza la questione della densità di architetti in Italia, facendo emergere senza margine di opinioni questa anomalia tutta italiana.

Iniziarono a nascere i cosiddetti portali architecture, aseptic containers where the quantity and quality often replaced the space where critical reflection and was reduced even more. Our technology in pure HTML 1.0 did not allow us to compete in this direction, or we wanted. Retain our identity, as well as maintained and Archphoto Architettura.it that even today, along with a handful of other foreigners, can be considered the only magazine exclusively digital architecture.

arrive until 2008, after a rather long period of standby, in a sense refounded Channelbeta. Was completely revamped the editorial board and editorial staff and decided to pass the soon as possible to a dynamic platform. We decided to integrate the social networks and platforms to maximize Flickr and Youtube . The first article that came out after this renewal was " The deck of the Star System" : an editorial manifesto with as relaunched Channelbeta. We were keen to stress our editorial policy, talent scouting, research the architecture and not only so-called minor. We decided, from now on, only to publish projects and possibly unprecedented, adding that bottle of photos, especially the designs of plans, elevations and sections. This new momentum brought us another prestigious award, first prize in the Culture of ' eContent Award 2008 in ex aequo with a project created by CNR. An award recognized with the Silver Plaque of the President of the Republic and we ran to the WSA to represent Italy in global competition.

In the past two years, our work was mainly to show that there are unknown architectures that have much to say and that before the architect, the architecture exists. I must say with some pride that, thanks to us for the first time Plasma Studio have been published in Italy, as well as Giancarlo Mazzanti i, Plan B, Piñol , Li Xiaodong, ECDM , Mass Studies , Ishigami etc etc ...

We continued to make our contribution on hot topics such as the housing plan, The New Town and in particular in the last period we have been dedicated to a fierce battle for the realization of ' Auditorium at Shigeru Ban L'Aquila . L'Aquila in a sense part of our DNA, being the entire editorial board Abruzzo birth or adoption, in addition to the fact that two of us were directly affected by this terrible tragedy. Despite the strongly we felt inside, we never wanted to deal with this issue outside of our editorial line, we did only when these events have intersected our area. The question that we raised with the Auditorium of Shigeru Ban has been around the world, we managed to bring the attention of big media that acted as a sounding board, and thanks to our small contribution, now finally it has come to light this is so important to the city.

Currently our store has news and articles from over 3,000 projects, we are on Facebook with a user account saturated of 5,000 over 2700 friends that follow us from fan page. Our channel Flickr has about 5,000 photos while on Youtube we have created one of the main channels of architecture with about 650 members and over 300,000 videos viewed.

Finally we created architecturefeed that, while not a blog, is a useful tool to control the main sources of information architecture. the Redazione di Channelbeta ha selezionato, durante mesi di lavoro, migliaia di siti web di architettura, li abbiamo selezionati e divisi per categorie: news, projects, design, competitions& jobs e naturalmente blogs.
